IMPLEMENTATION OF 2020 CIP CODES IN FEDERAL STUDENT AID SYSTEMS

The U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics has updated the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) codes. This is the first update to the CIP codes since 2010. CIP codes get reported to COD, NSLDS and other Federal Student Aid websites and are used to classify instructional programs by their major. On April 26, 2020 a system update is planned for the COD website to accommodate the 2020 CIP codes. NSLDS and EdExpress will also be updated in April, though a specific date hasn’t been announced. Schools will need to update their CIP codes in their Financial Aid Management software and should work with their vendors to do so. To assist schools, the NCES website maintains a list of eligible majors and their CIP codes. https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cipcode and you can find additional information about the forthcoming changes and requirements in this electronic announcement from Federal Student Aid.
